Marble is geologically resulted form limestone or dolomite with calcite crystals that are well-developed due to the metamorphic processes they have undergone.

The varieties of marble colours are generated by the impurities contained (red from the iron salts; brown from manganese salts, grey from graphite, etc.), while its veins are caused by the numerous cracks filled with secondary calcite.

Technical characteristics:

Average bulk density:          2.5 - 2.7 t/m3

Water absorption capacity:  0.1 - 2.0 %

Compressive strength:         60 - 90 N/mm2

MOHS hardness:                 4 - 5

Freeze-thaw resistance:      depending on origin.

Thanks to its characteristics, marble is highly recommended for indoor work: floor and wall tiling, frames, stairs, decorative elements, etc. For outdoor work, marble should be subject to special treatment as it is affected by the weather, which may lead to it becoming matte or cracking as a result of the freeze-thaw cycle or acid rain. It is recommended for low- and medium-traffic floors and stairs given its average wear coefficient.

Marble has been one of the most popular materials since antiquity due to its multiple colour varieties and versatility. There is a wide range of marble varieties, which cover a very large geographical area of origin: Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey, Romania, Portugal and Brazil.

The most important varieties of marble currently sold and used are: Ruschita, Cararra, Rosso Levanto, Nero Marquina, Pelino Bianco, Crema Marfil, Verde Guatemala, Rainforest Green, Magic Brown and Lotus Rosalia.
